часто рассматривается как часть цифровой геометрии (digital geometry); изучает свойства и характеристики двумерных и трёхмерных цифровых изображений (образов), по топологическим свойствам и характеристикам соответствующих реальным объектам. Автором этого нового научного направления был Азриэл Розенфелд (Azriel Rosenfeld, 1931-2004 гг.), исследователь в области компьютерной обработки и распознавания изображений; он и предложил сам этот термин в 1973 г. Наряду с теорией графов (graph theory) цифровая топология играет важную роль в развитии машинного зрения (computer vision), распознавания образов (pattern recognition) и смежных областей
